Imagine if you had a heating and cooling system that combined different sources of energy, and that you could select the source according to conditions or cost? Imagine if this system could be programmed to automatically select the most cost effective option. That is exactly what a hybrid heating system does! By combining an electrically driven, air source heat pump with a fossil fuel furnace, significant cost savings and protection from certain unforeseen events can be realized.
An air source heat pump, charged with today’s environmentally friendly and super efficient refrigerant, can obtain heat from surprisingly cold outside air and transfer it to the central furnace where it is distributed throughout the house by the blower. An added bonus is that this process can be reversed in summer when the heat pump draws the warm air from within the house; essentially, you get an air conditioner thrown in! At the same time, the furnace can still operate traditionally using natural gas or propane as the heat source. All the while, the system can be programmed to automatically switch from one source to the other for the most cost effective operation, taking into consideration fuel/electricity costs, outside air temperature, time of use charges, etc. Of course, a manual override is available if one energy source or another becomes unavailable.
